ARCHIVESOur holdings include about 110 boxes in total, comprised of both original manuscript material, photographs, family Bibles, photograph albums, etc, as well as a great deal of copied material relating to North Grenville from both National and Ontario Archives. We also have a large collection of original newspapers (1898-1999 with some lacunae) and a large collection of published material (school text books, maps, local gazetteers, etc.).
We also have microfilm and photocopies of available census records from the constituent municipalities that make up North Grenville, as well as extensive cemetery records from local churches, public and private cemeteries. Our artifacts range from iron furnace doors to wooden spinning wheels (an original Horton Row, made in Kemptville), as well as cardboard boxes from general stores (e.g., washing powder) and paintings. There are a few brass instruments from local bands, and a wooden cheese box. Gordon Moat demonstrating the Horton Row walking wheel in the collection of the North Grenville Historical Society. Moat identified the wheel and has written and spoken extensively on the maker’s career both regionally and internationally.
As for photographs, we have some negatives and original prints. We also have a large number of scanned prints taken from old newspapers. In many cases, these are the only versions of the pictures extant, so we have to make do with what we have. We have a large collection of VHS tapes of local Council meetings covering the past 15-20 years.
